Overview
Performance-based learning assessments focused on clear, transparent
criteria as a mutual teacher/student focus for learning form the
backbone of the instructional strategy and are applied at every
level of the program — teacher training and arts learning
and student arts learning.
Teachers are assessed during the summer institute and students
are assessed during Arts-Infused Summer School using a range of
criteria-based assessment strategies that include checklists, rubrics,
self-assessment reflection, class critique, and portfolio performance
selection. Arts Impact is able to use these assessments to inform
teacher and student program participants on their personal artistic
growth, as well as track specific teacher or student learning. Further,
the assessments are used to inform overall program evaluation and
chart ways to improve program instructional strategies.
Training in applying various strategies of performance-based assessments
in the classroom to arts teaching is part of the summer institute
curriculum.
Once teachers are back in the classroom and teaching arts lessons,
student learning assessment data is gathered from each teacher so
that Arts Impact can evaluate the overall program goal of successful
transfer of learning from artist mentor to teacher to student. But
most important, teachers have the necessary feedback from the assessments
to inform both the student and their teaching.
